» Our History
The history of COHR is one that was started more than seven years ago and we've been keeping track of it and reflect back on it often. We are proud of our history and how far we can trace it back citing specific events, which influenced who we are today. Be sure to read it all and continue to check back as more is added throughout the lifetime of our clan.
Chapter I: The Beginning
The Clan of Heaven's Rogues was born in April 2001 while four brothers were playing Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast. These four brothers were Zarndelius, Gnoff, Lord Colt, and Shadowbane. They decided to start a clan for the game, and with the help of Wincklepluck, Kain, Vivi, and ViRUS, the Dark Angels Guild (DAG) was born. The guild became a thriving group inside the game because of our main goal of coming together to just have fun inside the game. After being very successful in the game, another clan challenged us inside the game. A childish guild, also called the Dark Angels, decided that they did not like the idea that we both shared the same name. Their leader, Memphis Rain, protested that we change our name or they would destroy us in the game. For a long time, we did not give in and kept gaming while trying to ignore the other guild. However, after a while of having our members gameplay experience ruined, we decided to strike back against the other guild. One of our members, Kain, created a new character and snuck into our rival guild. He purposely got caught, stated that he was from the Beast Klan (another prominent guild), and effectively got the other guild off of our case as they decided to bicker with the BK. Soon after, the guild was threatened to be completely disbanded due to the departure of Wincklepluck. He was our webmaster and forum administrator, and with our members becoming bored of the game, we didn't have a home anymore. DAG was quickly falling apart as Phantasy Star Online was dying.
Chapter II: Plugging Back In
A few months after Wincklepluck left the guild, the clan existed in small remnants across the game. Zarndelius came across the old forums and after reading an emotional post by "Blue", decided that he would try to ressurect the clan. He e-mailed all the members he could possibly find and told others to try and bring the remnants back together. When all was said and done, only nine members remained in the new clan. With more than half our members gone, it was decided that we would need to create a whole new clan structure. New ranks were created, a new website was established, members were promoted, and we even changed our name. After long discussions, it was decided that we would go by "The Clan of Heaven's Rogues." After designing a website on Angelfire, we bought our own domain and GameCOHR.com was officialy established. Two members, ViRUS and Millerbomb, were promoted to become leaders with Zarndelius due to their past experience and influence in DAG. ViRUS also became the co-webmaster alongside Zarndelius and both members helped promote the new clan website any way that they could. By this time, most members were practically friends and knew so much about each other. In order to ease the transition to the new generation of consoles, we decided to add gaming news and editorials to our website. Shortly after the transition to becoming a hybrid clan and news website, Zarn had to take a long absence from the clan. ViRUS had to take the website reigns solo and also try and lead a clan with Millerbomb.
Chapter III: Free Times, Total Chaos
ViRUS, who was used to having Zarn and Millerbomb back him up, had to take on many issues by himself. This proved to be incredibly stressful to everyone in the clan, since the clan was trying to be revived and reinvented at the same time. In order to streamline membership, the "Trial" status for members was erradicated and soon new members were not even held to the Creed. Soon after, it was apparent that ViRUS needed some temporarly help to help calm things down on the website. Many longtime members were given modertor privliges, but soon the power went out of control. Members were moderating each other for personal reasons and heated debates were started. The tension in the clan was at an all-time high and eventually boiled over. Finally, Zarndelius returned after four months and helped ease the problems that were started. Not knowing what else to do, Zarn decided to turn the website back into a pure gaming clan. However, two members named Datasage and Weinter Trick somehow managed to sneak past the clan overhaul and we paid a heavy price.
Chapter IV: The Beginning of the End
Phantasy Star Online was released on the Gamecube, which made members excited and prompted the clan to be in good shape again. Everquest Online Adventures for the PS2 was out and the Xbox Live section of the clan was thriving due to games like MechAssault. The surviving leaders of COHR (ViRUS, Zarn, and Millerbomb) finally fit into their respective roles as leaders of the clan. It was also during this time that another clan, called the Crazy Outcasts, decided to merge into COHR and increase its member base. Eventually though, things inside the clan began to get tense again due to a leadership change. Weiner Trick had taken over the reigns of the Phantasy Star Online section for the Gamecube, and began to create inner wars between members. Zarn found out about the problems in the game, and banned Weiner Trick from the clan. Datasage, who had garnered many friends during this time, spoke out against Zarn's actions. Two separate factions were created in the clan as ViRUS and Zarn, the only two active Lords at the time, also disagreed on the action to ban Weiner Trick. The clan eventually split, with the entire Gamecube section of the clan leaving COHR and creating their own clan. Eventually, that clan failed due to midguided leadership. However, the scar was left on COHR and the two leaders who were left were not talking to each other. The remaining members were left clueless, but many of them started saying goodbye to the friends they made over the years and posted contact information in case COHR failed. Zarn decided to shut down COHR, as the members predicted, and it was announced that the site would only stay up until the end of the month.
Chapter V: The End?
Many members came together and created posts thanking people for the wonderful times they've had due to other members. After reading all the posts, Zarn decided that he couldn't abandon the friendships he made and cut off the other ones that members made. Zarn decided to create a new clan from COHR, since the name had so many bad memories attached now, and keep the members who never caused any problem. Millerbomb came back from active duty in the military and helped Zarn create the new clan. Medic, an active member in Final Fantasy XI, also was promoted to become a new leader in the clan. Eventually, Zarn and ViRUS reconciled their differences and ViRUS was allowed back into the leadership of the clan. Scodoublet, another active member from the Crazy Outcast merger, became the High Praetor of the clan. The main role of the new rank was just in case the leaders disagreed on an issue 2-2. A clan-wide chat was held and the members talked about what they would like to see in our new clan, including our new name. The "Crimson Guardians" was chosen as the new name of our clan. The members also agreed on a council system, where everybody had equal say in the clan and we had monthly meetings to discuss issues. The leaders were basically just there to enforce the rules that the members had created, which led to a much better clan.
Chapter VI: Preparation for Rebirth
After a successful year of CGC, there were discussions among the leaders about where we were headed. If we kept heading down the path we were, then we could be disbanded due to lack of member support in our games. The leadership needed to do something drastic in order to restore activity in the clan and get members pumped up about the clan again. That was when it was decided that many members lack of pride in the "Crimson Guardians" idea for the clan. Members grew closer during this time and the leaders became much more skilled leaders. The leaders schemed in their private forums about a rebirth of COHR, including overhauls of every single practice we ever had. New ranks and a new website were secretly created without the members knowing. The leadership couldn't wait to tell the members about the new site, but we needed an interesting way to reveal it to them. It was decided that we would do a mock "hacking scenario", which would eventually lead to the new site. The CGC saga of "Bacon_and_Eggs" began to great fanfare within the clan. Cryptic messages were hidden all over the server, and a countdown was started which would end on March 26th, the week before the anniversary of our clan's founding date. The leadership denied all involvement and promised to get to the bottom of the hack, and loved that the members fell for the trap. The leaders wanted to make the events seem even more real, which proved to be a giant downfall.
Chapter VII: The Hackers Revealed
The leaders created new users on the website that claimed responsibility for the hacks and members started to question them. These new members promised that when the countdown ended, that CGC would be no more. Technically, the leaders were not lying due to the clan being switched back over to COHR. When the countdown only had a small time left, all the COHR members (past and present) entered into the chat room to plead for the clan's existence. When the countdown timer hit, the leaders unmasked themselves as the culprits and released the details of the revamped COHR. All of the new enhancements and ideas were lost in the fury of the clan members. They couldn't believe that the leaders would lie to their own members, especially about the end of the clan. The leaders apoligized, promised never to do anything like it again, and postponed the change over to the new clan to ease concerns. The week of our clan's anniversary, we flipped the switch and the new Clan of Heaven's Rogues was reborn.
Chapter VIII: Reconstruction
The switch from CGC to COHR did not go completely as planned, and many issues were technical issues were revealed. The forums needed to be replaced due to a corrupt database and much of the newly constructed site became corrupt as well. The site was down for a long time as the webmasters fixed all the problems and updated the new website. During this time, the rest of the clan was active on the forums and involved in our supported games. Recruiting new members became difficult, mainly because all of our information was corrupt on the main website. After a month or two of having a defective website, everything was finished and the website was finally stable enough to show prospective members. The webmasters learned from this mistake and made it a policy never to push an unfinished website to the live directory, where we could make a bad first impression on a possible member by showing carelessness to the home of our online community.
Chapter IX: The Hack
Almost a year after the website was reconstructed, hackers exploited a flaw in our directory structure of our website. Not only did the hackers take our site offline, but they also corrupted nearly every single file in our various directories. The entire website needed to be taken offline due to serious maintenance and reconstructed from the ground up. After many failed redesigns and not having a fully functional website for a very long time, the current website was created to fulfill a couple of new goals. The new website would not try to be too many things at once and went back to just being a way of storing the clan rules, policies, and member discussions. Many community aspects such as gaming news, random members, extended profiles, and other items were removed to streamline the new website. Although some members didn't like the idea of features being removed, it was absolutely neccessary to keep the website active and functional for extended periods of time without constant maintenance.
Chapter X: The New COHR
Over the last couple of months of COHR, members have departed and new members have joined. For once in our clan's existence since DAG, the clan is finally stable. The leadership is active, we have officially supported games with many participants, and our web-site is fully complete and up to date. This is a shining point in COHR's existence due to many new changes, including the merging with the Forgotten Exiles, a World of Warcraft guild. Many new members have been added to our community as well as older ones becoming more active every day. COHR is continuing to grow, face new challenges, and is always trying to remember the goal we had in mind when the clan was created. That goal is to bring many different people together and make the gaming experience much better for all of our members.
